Activated carbon is charcoal that has been treated with oxygen to open up millions of tiny pores between the carbon atoms. The treated or activated carbon has a massive surface area (2000 - 3000 square metres per gram of activated carbon) making it highly effective at adsorbing tastes and odours, as well as chlorine and organic colour from water.An activated carbon filter is a filter housing (either a cartridge filter housing or a granular activated carbon media filter is used for activated carbon filtration) containing granular activated carbon or an activated carbon block cartridge.Operation/Process :
Low flow applications - activated carbon cartridge filters: water flows from the outside of the activated carbon cartridge to the inside of the activated carbon cartridge, through a collector tube, and out to process or the point-of-use. When the activated carbon becomes exhausted, or blocked with suspended matter, the cartridge has to be replaced.
High flow applications - At Shubham, we use our conventional multimedia sand filter design, replacing a portion of the multimedia filter repack with granular activated carbon. This allows the filter to act as both a sand filter and an activated carbon filter, removing suspended particles, taste and odour, chlorine and organic colour. When the activated carbon becomes blocked with suspended matter, the filter can be backwashed in the same way as a conventional sand filter. When the activated carbon in the filter becomes exhausted, it is usually replaced, although some of the systems we manufacture are fitted with steam sterilization components, to regenerate the activated carbon bed.Salient Features

Working Principle:Raw water is passed through the Multi grade media filter,contains anthracite at a top layer of media followed by fine & Coarse Garnet and quartz sandsupported by pebbles and gravels. Multi grades of media and layers provide extra ordinary dirt holding capacity at various level of total media depth and produce unparalleled filter water quality.During the filtration cycle the largest particles are strained out by the anthracite, coarse and fine sand, Coarse & fine garnet though a combination of adhesion and straining.  Since the particles in the water are filtered out at various depths in a multimedia filter, the filter does not clog as quickly as if all of the particles were all caught by the top layer.

Working Principle:
 Water from the system is pumped through the over drain assembly at the top of the filter tank and distributed evenly over the media. Suspended particles are trapped in the filter media. The filtered water then passes from the tank through the under drain assembly at the bottom of the filter and returns to the piping system. 

Type of Installation: -
 Direct piping connection: - Inlet and outlet of SSF are directly connected to main stream pipe and utilize main stream pumps for further filtration process which eliminates the requirement of extra pumps  
 Cooling tower pond Connection: - This type of installation need additional pump which is directly connected to cooling tower pond at suction side and feed water into SSF for further filtration process and filtered water goes back to the cooling tower pond at the opposite of pump suction.
 This recirculates entire pond volume and does not depend on main stream pump and its operation.
